The elimination of pain, total relaxation of the muscles, prevention of infection and the use of laboratory tests are useful aids to the surgeon. A qualified surgical team, essential for successful performance of and recovery from an operation, usually consists of a surgeon, at least an assistant, an anesthesiologist and one or more nurses.
