CHANGES IN THE BREAST - PREGNANCY
Starting in the second month the breast
enlarge progressively and become somewhat nodular as both glands and ducts increase. The
nipples enlarge and become darker and more erectile. Later the areolae also darken and the
visible veins over the breast become accentuated. Colostrum, a thick, yellowish fluid, can
often be expressed from the nipple by gentle massage during the later part of pregnancy.
CHANGES IN THE BREAST - ELDERLY
The breasts of an aging
woman tend to diminish in size as glandular tissue atrophies and is replaced by fat.
Although the proportion of fat increases, its total amount may also decrease. The breasts
often get flabby and hang lower on the chest. The ducts surrounding the nipple may become
more easily palpable as firm strands.
